Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, often referred to as KAP, offers a revolutionary approach to mental health treatment.

What is Group KAP?

Michigan Progressive Health offers a variety of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) Groups for clients. These groups may have a focus on a specific diagnosis, such as depression or PTSD, or may be focused on a specific demographic such as a mens group, women’s group, queer group, etc. In the supportive and confidential group setting, clients embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing alongside 3 fellow group members, guided by two of our experienced and compassionate therapists. During the sessions, clients have the opportunity to explore and process deep-rooted emotions, traumas, and patterns that may be holding you back from living a fulfilling life. Ketamine’s ability to promote introspection and increase neuroplasticity can help you gain new insights, release emotional blockages, and foster personal growth.

Why Group KAP?

This innovative and transformative approach combines the power of psychotherapy and community with the therapeutic benefits of ketamine to create a unique healing experience. Our small group sessions foster a sense of community and connection, as clients share their experiences and learn from others who are on a similar journey. The supportive environment allows for open and honest discussions, fostering empathy and understanding among participants. Group KAP can also be a good option for folks who are curious about how ketamine can deepen their healing, but may not need or want to commit to 6-8 initiation infusions.

A ketamine infusion allows the unhealthy neuronal pathways that are constantly “on” in your brain to turn off for a period of time.

Cost Benefit of Group KAP

Choosing group ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) offers significant cost savings while still providing high-quality therapeutic support. A package of 3 preparation sessions, 3 KAP sessions, and 3 integration sessions in a group setting costs $1,500, plus the medical consultation fee of $250 (billable to insurance with BCBS or Aetna). In contrast, engaging in individual KAP sessions for the same services would typically cost $2,900 (not including the medical consult). This makes the group option an affordable way to access a comprehensive, structured therapeutic experience while benefiting from the shared healing and support of a group setting.

The Group KAP Experience: Preparation, Medicine Sessions, Integration

Preparation: The group experience begins with 2-3 virtual preparation sessions where community is cultivated, the group learns about and prepares for the KAP process, and facilitators and group members engage in open and honest therapeutic discussions. The group becomes a supportive and safe community to enter into three ketamine experiences together, with members helping to create a “setting” centered in safety and mutual understanding.

Medicine Sessions: During the group medicine sessions, we utilize oral or intramuscular (IM) ketamine. The therapists are always present in the group, providing guidance and support. KAP groups may include 1-3 medicine sessions.

Integration: The group meets for one integration session the week after each medicine session, where group members hear from each other about their experiences; how they are helping them learn about themselves, how they are making meaning of them, and how they are leveraging insights and symptom relief to improve their lives.

Group KAP for Therapists

Michigan Progressive Health also offers KAP groups for therapists. These groups are a great opportunity for therapists to support themselves along their healing journey, gain more personal experience with ketamine and altered states of consciousness, prevent or address therapist burnout, and enhance their community with like-minded providers.

Embarking on Your Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Experience: The Consultation

To start your journey with Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, your first step would be scheduling a consultation with one of our providers. This consultation enables us to understand your medical and mental health history better, assess whether ketamine therapy is a suitable and safe treatment for you, and ensure that ketamine therapy is the optimal path for you in our clinic.

An ideal candidate for KAP through our clinic would (1) maintain an active therapeutic relationship with an external provider in addition to working with our therapist, (2) be on little to no psychiatric medications, and (3) be prepared to invest time in their health and wellness outside of the ketamine sessions.
